Is Dove Soap More Moisturizing Than Irish Spring

CHEMISTRY RESEARCH: Soap is a product that is used on a daily basis by millions each and every day. From the most expensive brands to the dollar store generic versions, it still used. The cost of a bar of Dove Soap is about 4 dollars pricier than there competitor Irish Spring. Both soaps claim to be moisturizing and good for your skin. But which one is actually doing what they advertise? So to put this question to the test my partner and I decided to test the levels of moisture in our skin after using both soaps.
Image result for sodium tallowate formula To look into the chemical structure of what exactly makes soap, soap, in particular, Dove. We find that Sodium Tallowate is what helps the skin become clean after use. Sodium Tallowate is a true soap that is made by mixing fatty tissue (or tallow, which is a hard fatty substance from rendered animal fat) with sodium hydroxide. Mixing all these things together created an agent for all cleansing products. For skin Sodium Tallowate is very good and bad because binds with the oil and grease in your skin and washes them away but having too much moisture pulled from your skin can be harmful.

Image result for lauric acid formulaAnother Chemical that is found in Dove soap is Lauric Acid. Lauric Acid is a substance that is extracted from coconuts for developing monolaurin. Monolaurin is a substance that helps fight bacteria, viruses, and yeast. It will also add hardness to the soap as well as promoting good lather for a good cleaning. But too much of Lauric acid can cause your natural oils from your skin to be stripped away causing dryness due to the wonderful cleaning abilities that it has.

Image result for stearic acidStearic acid is found in Dove soap as well. Stearic Acid is very important when making soaps, due to the wonderful cleaning properties. It helps removes dirt, sweat, and other nasty things from the body that comes in contact with your skin throughout the day. Stearic acid is fat from farm animals as well as domestic animals and vegetables. This is one of the main parts of soap, seeing that the whole purpose of even using it is to get clean. Stearic acid is a fatty acid typically produced by hydrolysis of common animal and vegetable fats and oils, followed by fractionation (distillation or crystallization) of the resulting fatty acids. Pressing methods separate the liquid unsaturated fatty acids from the solid saturated fatty acids.

PERSONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY:

1. Sodium Tallowate doesn't have any personal safety issues, that could cause any major damage to the skin. But according to EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database it can cause eczema and blackheads. As far as environmental safety, nothing was found.

2. Stearic Acid doesn't have any personal safety issues that could cause any major damage to the skin. But according to EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database, it can cause irritation to the skin and be harsh to the skin.

3. Lauric Acid doesn't have any personal or environmental safety concerns.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE: First we lathered one arm with the Dove soap. We washed the arm with the Dove for about 30 seconds. Then patted our arm dry with a paper towel until the arm was completely dry. Next, we used the U-Track Skin Analyzer to test the moisture level of the arm that washed with the Dove soap. We then repeated these steps with the Irish Spring soap on the other arm. Lastly, we recorded our results.

RESULTS: The Irish Spring soap left our skin at a moisture level of 40% while the Dove soap left our skin at a moisture level of only 34%. This is because in Dove soap there are certain ingredients that aren’t found in Irish Spring soap. One of them is Sodium Tallowate, which is good at cleansing your skin but can dry your skin out. Dove soap also contains Lauric Acid which is also good for cleansing the skin but can also be damaging to your skin when used in excessive amounts which result in dryness.

PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS: One way that Dove Soap could improve overall is by using less Sodium Tallowate. Even though it is wonderful for cleaning the skin, it can cause dryness which resulted in Irish Spring being the more moisturizing soap in our experiment. If they could improve that, the soap would be better for the skin.
