Name brand Vs. Beauty supply store foundation
Name brand Vs. Beauty supply store foundation
For most of my teenage and more frugal years I’ve always used drugstore makeup. So when I had a well paying job, I jumped at the chance to buy Fenty Foundation. You know? The makeup line from Rihanna. It was so hyped up by her team, celebrities and common folk. But what makes it more better than my old drugstore brand? I decided to put it to the test and run an experiment to see which foundation would keep my face more matte (less moist) over a period of time.
Chemistry Behind Fenty-
The first ingredient in Fenty and in most beauty products is aqua, or for the most part, water. Its main usage is to hydrate the skin and prevent irritation. It's a natural ingredient and has no safety concerns nor environmental safety issues.
The second ingredient that stood out was Dimethicone. This ingredient fills in textures and fine lines create a smooth flawless appearing skin. This all may sound appealing to the consumer but it’s pretty much a layer of silicone on your face. This can clog pores and worsen
acne and cause dry skin. Also this ingredient can pollute the environment during the process and after usage.
The third ingredient that stood out to me was Talc. This has been used for thousands of years. It’s the main ingredient in baby powder. Talc absorb moisture and keeps things dry. A risk factor of Talc is that it is similar to asbestos (a carcinogen; cancer causing agent ). You are more likely to have complications further down in life and it causes tumors.
Experiment- For my experiment I decided to wear both foundations and use Mr. Paul's moisture level device and compare my results.
Procedure-
- Clean face
- Apply 1st foundation (Fenty)
- Wear for at least 5 hours
- Measure moisture level of face
- The following day repeat steps 1-4, replacing name brand Foundation with drugstore brand.
Results- My skin appeared the same for each day and it didn't get too dry or too moist. Only moisture skin level could tell me which worked the best.

Conclusion- I was astonished that i had the same exact moisture level in my skin compared to the cheaper brand. I'm unsure if it was an error with the device or my experiment, but I was sure Fenty would win the war. Its claims of a matte finish is just as compared to a $7 brand from Walmart. The results may be similar due to the fact of a similar ingredient list. Most of them could be found in the cheaper brand. Why pay more for something just because of a name attached to it? Girls...or Guys… save your money and get your makeup from Walmart.
