Chemistry Research: A common ingredient in mouthwash is Thymole. this ingredient has the potential to give of H+ atoms when there is a base. In the case of mouthwash the base is in water. the solubility of the Thymole helps to kill the bacteria that live sin our mouths. These mouthwashes contain ingredients that need ethanol to dissolve and actually kill the bacteria in our mouths, without these concentrations the breath freshening and germs killing would not take place. So to find out which one works the best i tested both mouthwashes to see how my mouth feels after each use.

Thymol  is a component of thyme oil with antibacterial and antifungal properties, which is why it's often found in mouthwash to fight tooth decay and eliminate bad breath.

It is the methyl ester of salicylic acid. It is a colorless, viscous liquid with a sweet odor. It is produced by many species of plants, particularly wintergreen.

Personal And Environmental Safety

  • Thymol doesn't have any safety concerns other then the fact that it  has led to primary skin irritation and skin sensitisation but only in rare cases.

  •  Methyl Salicylate is a personal safety issue when someone swallows a dangerous amount of a product containing this substance which is called an Methyl Salicylate overdose.

  • Eucalyptol is only toxic if ingested at higher than normal doses.

Experimental Procedure

Step 1: Eat food ( It can be any type of food )

Step 2: Do your regular teeth brushing routine.

Step 3: Do step 1 and 2 twice the first time with Listerine and the second time with Colgate.

Results: When i used the Listerine mouthwash i could still taste my meal in my mouth and it didn't feel as fresh as the bottle says it will make your mouth but when i used Colgate i felt more fresh and i could actually taste the peppermint taste.

Proposed Improvement: One way Listerine can improve in their product is using more thymol to improve the fresh peppermint taste that the advertise.
