Does Nivea Keep Your Skin More Moisturized Than Its Competitors? by Amber Green and Samiyah Bond
Lotion is a vital part of a person’s everyday routine. Whether it's for the face or body, people put on lotion at least once a day. Some only put it on certain times a day while others put it on after every hand wash. Everyone wants to stay moisturized. Some people buy the most expensive lotion while others are comfortable with the cheap store brand. We took the lotion that we use every day and compared it to other lotions to see if the type of brand does affect a person’s moisture level.
Chemistry Research
Three main ingredients in Nivea are Vitamin E, Aloe Vera and Pantherol. Each ingredient claims to help skin in some type of way.
Vitamin E is found in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oil. When coming in contact with skin, Vitamin E reduces UV damage in skin, while also protecting skin from damage.
Aloe Vera is found in the Aloe Vera plant. The chemical that gives Aloe Vera its properties is called Aloe-emodin. When coming in contact with skin, Aloe Vera helps to reduce acne, treat burns, and help heal dry skin.
Chemical formula - C15H10O5
Panthenol is found in honey. It can also be known as Vitamin B-5. When coming in contact with skin, Panthenol improves hydration and reduces itching and the inflammation of skin.
Chemical formula - C9H19NO4
Personal and Environmental Safety
Vitamin E- not harmful unless used at a high dose.
Aloe Vera- not harmful unless used at a high dose.
Panthenol- not harmful unless used at a high dose.

- Wake up
- Brush teeth and wash face
- Put lotion on hands and face (keep the amount the same)
- Measure moisture content after 48 hours

As seen in the result there was no difference in moisture level between the three lotions. The reason for this is because each lotion uses similar products. Nivea does not have a rare ingredient that makes it stand out from other lotions. Therefore, it keeps skin just as moisturized as other lotions. Aloe vera, Vitamin E, and Panthenol are good for skin but they are not ingredients that are only used in Nivea. They are used in most lotions. Nivea is still a good lotion, but our research found that it is not unique from other lotions.
To make Nivea stand out from its competitors we suggest that it finds that special ingredient that most lotions do not already have in them. Nivea needs to find something to promote other than moisturization because it does the same for skin as the other lotions that were tested. We also suggest that Nivea find a unique scent for there lotion to make them stand out from other lotions.
