Trust TRESemme? or you got2b glued?

TrUst TRESemme? Or you Got2b glued?

My project was based on holding sprays, I was trying to identify which holding spray was longer lasting than the other. Holding spray is really common in the hair industry when it comes to styling and maintaining different hairstyles. The overall chemistry behind holding spray are the polymers that the sprays contain, essentially the spray comes out of the nozzle and the liquid slides down the strands of hair and interacts with itself, as it dries the hair and bonds together like glue. Yes this makes the hair stiff, but it is all to keep the hair together as a unit to limit flyaways and pieces falling out of place. To determine which of the two was better, I sprayed the different sprays onto different sections of the hair and curled them with my curling wand. I was sure to spray each spray the same amount of times and strived to curl them the same exact way.

Chemistry and Safety Concerns

Substances found in both products

Alcohol Denat which is really just a small amount of denaturant added to ethyl alcohol to make it taste bad. Has a variety of purposes in cosmetics. It acts as an anti-foaming agent, astringent, antimicrobial agent, and a solvent. It also helps deliver the active ingredients of a product. Almost every type of skincare product lists it as an ingredient, particularly those specifically designed to treat acne.

* Denatured Alcohol should never be consumed because it is mixed with methanol, if it is ingested blindness or even death can occur.

Hydrofluorocarbon 152A, better known as 1-difluoroethane and is a gas that functions as a propellant in personal care products.Hydrofluorocarbon 152a is used in 372 formulations; the majority of uses are in leave-on hair care products.

*Very low toxicity for humans and animals, as well as a low explosive limit.

Aminomethyl Propanol is is an organic compound. It is colorless liquid that is classified as an alkanolamine. Aminomethyl propanol is used for the preparation of buffer solutions and keeping the pH balances even.
* Safe when it is concentrated at 2%, any thing above is carcinogenic.

Substance found in TRESemme

Diisopropyl adipate is usually added to cosmetic products to soften synthetic compounds or to act as an emollient.
* There are no potential threats from this chemical.

Substance found in Got2b glued

Ppg-12 dimethicone is a synthetic polymer composed of PEG (polyethylene glycol) and dimethicone, a silicon-based polymer. It acts as a surface tension depressant, hair conditioning agent, skin conditioning agent, wetting agent, emulsifier and foam builder in a wide variety of beauty products and cosmetics.
* Can be harmful because of ethylene oxide which increases the chances of brain, breast, and uterine cancer. This chemical is safe for healthy skin, broken or irritated skin can become more irritated if they come in contact with this chemical.

Experimental Procedure

  1.  Brush out all of the hair
  2. Pre-heat wand curlers to 360
  3. Part the Hair
  4. Spray it with TRESemme tres two spray (3 squirts, top, middle, end)
  5. Curl it
  6. Repeat steps 1-5, this time skipping step 4
  7. Repeat steps 1-5 this time replacing TRESemme holding spray with Got2b glued

Results

By examining the photos you can conclude that Got2b glued was the best option for holding it's curl.
The hair in it's natural state

(Right after being curled)
From left to right; TRESemme; No spray;  Got2b glued

A week later
Curls the day after

When looking at the photos you can see the different between the curls. We aren't necessarily looking at how nice the curls are but how well they maintained as a unit. The curl on the far right, which was sprayed with Got2b glued shows to have kept up with itself. Looking deeper, I got to analyze the curls better in person and i could see and feel that the TRESemme spray was no longer present and the same state that it should have been or at least compared to the presence of Got2b glued. Both products have MANY of the same ingredients, however they use different amounts of each. In order for TRESemme to be more longer lasting like Got2b glued it should definitely upgrade their chemical that they have acting as the "glue". I don't think it is necessary to get rid of any of the ingredients that they have because Diisopropyl adipate is a good idea. It is suppose to soften the hair so it doesn't look so stiff, however it could be too much of it that is defeating the purpose of the holding spray. If my first solution does not work than i think it is safe for TRESemme to get rid of this ingredient instead of having a chemical that is basically battling itself in a bottle and losing every time.
