Which is better Jergens Ultra Healing or Nivea Daily Moisture Lotion ?

 For years I had been using the brand Jergens Ultra Healing  Lotion and just a few days ago I decided to try Nivea Ultra Healing Lotion because I heard good things about how it keeps your skin moisturized. At first I was a little skeptical because I have really sensitive skin. The purpose of Bergens and Nivea lotion is to moisture, replenish and soften skin. Which I can say one of those products does just that!

Nivea is a German personal care brand that specializes in Body-Care. It is owned by the Hamburg-Based company it was found March 28, 1882 by Paul Carl Beiersford and in 1890 it was sold to Oscar Troplowitz.  Jergens lotion was created and invented in 1882. The company was called the Jergens soap company where they built for making soap and lotions. They are now one of the top companies in the world for moisturizers and hair products.

Chemistry, Indegredints and Safety Concerns

First lets take a look at some  of Jergens Indegredients. Sodium Hydroxide is known as the lye and caustic soda, ( a caustic and strong base ) is an inorganic compound with the formula (NaOH).  Sodium Hydroxide is an white crystalline substance that rapidly absorbs. Carbon Dioxide and moisture from the air. It is very soluble in water, alcohol and glycerin.  The major use of Sodium Hydroxide is as a chemical and in the manufacture of other chemical because it is inexpensive, it is used wherever strong bases are needed. In Jergens Sodium Hydroxide use is to hold the pH of the product. It is also used as a cleaning and deneurting products. In high concentrations its a significant skin sensitizer. Sodium Hydroxide can raise the pH Level of water but it will have to be in a extremely high dosage.

Glycerin is a simple poll compound. It is colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is sweet-tasting and non-toxic. Glycerol is also an incredibly effective moisturizer when used in cleanser. The Glycerol backbone is found in many lipids which are known as glycerides. it is widely used in food industry as a sweetener and Humcetant and in pharmaceutical formulations. In Jergens Glycerol is to moisture the skin by drawing water from the air into the skin's outer layer, it also form a protective layer that helps prevent moisture loss. Glycerol can however sometimes cause burning, stinging, or redness. Most emollients can be used safely and effectively with no side effects.

Stearic Acid also called octadecanoic acid is one of the useful types of saturated fatty acids that comes from many animals and vegetable fats and oils. It is a waxy solid and its chemical formula is CH3(CH2)16OOH Stearic Acid can cause skin irritation.

Ethanol With the chemical formula of (C2H5OH) also called Alcohol, Ethyl Alcohol, and Grain Alcohol is a clear, colorless liquid and the principle ingredient of alcoholic beverages like beer and wine because it can rapidly dissolve in water any other organic compounds. Ethanol is an ingredient in a range of products from personal care, beauty products and even paint. In Jergens Ethanol acts as a astringent to help clear skin and to help ensure that lotion ingredients do not separate. Ethanol can sometimes be flammable and should not be near any open flames. If you inhale Ethanol for to long it can cause coughing or headaches.

Vitamins in Jergens!

Vitamin C (C6H806) acts as a antioxidants to slow deterioration of the finished product caused by exposure to the air and to also help control the pH of the product. Vitamin E help nourish and and protect you skin, it can help reduce the appearance of scars same as Vitamin B5.                       

Experiment & Results

For my experiment I designed a test where I tested the lotion I used for years to a different brand of lotion to see which brand of lotion keeps my skin the softest and smoothest. I chose to compare it to one brand that also advertise there self as moisture and healing skin.

Procedure

1.) Take a hot shower.

2.) After Showering make sure skin is completely dry.

3.) Take Pictures before applying lotion and after applying.

4.) Apply Jergens Ultra Healing Lotion.

5.) Use Skin moisture test.

6.) Wear lotion for about 12 hours.

7.) Take pictures after 12 hours and compare to previous pictures for results.

8.) Record Results.

9.) Repeat steps 1-9 Using Nivea Daily Moisture!

Results

Jergen’s Ultra Healing	Nivea Daily Moisture
Observations: Light scent that smells good, left my skin feeling smooth and soft. Skin was glossy and shiny.	Observations: I didn’t like the smell, very thin (water like) skin still felt dry like I didn’t like the lotion at all.
Moisture  Percentage – 55%	Moisture Percentage – 20%

I can say I was happy with my results .These Results can justify that Jergens is the best lotion especially for really dry skin! I can say Jergens makes my skin feel very smooth and soft and has a good scent. Also Jergens have many other different types of lotion with different scents and skin types.
