Will certain hairspray products provide genuine moisture in hair for a reasonable amount of time?

Chemical Research

 1. Benzyl Salicylate (Luster's Pink Mosturizer/Glosser) 

 Benzyl Salicylate happens to be an ingredient and liquid that is clear, without any color added to it. Only thing known about the ingredient in the hair product is that it shines and protects the hair from UV rays.

                                  2.  Methylparaben (Wet and Wavy Frizz-Free Glosser)


Methylparaben is mainly found in skincare products rather than just hair products. This ingredient is meant to promote shine in hair, hair growth, and avoid signs of bacteria. 

                                 3. Propylene Glycol (Wet and Wavy Frizz-Free Glosser)

Propylene Glycol claims to help reduce bacteria growth in hair. It also claims to help the hair "absorb and retain moisture. Lastly, the ingredient absorbs any excess water. 

Personal and Environmental Safety Issues

1. Propylene Glycol can could negatively affect the bloodstream. It can cause symptoms of toxicity. It is harmful to inhale. If negatively affected by it, it takes up to 48 hours to leave the entire body. 

2. Methylparaben is dangerous by increasing the risks of breast cancer in a female's body. It is intact with breast cancer tissues. 


Experimental Procedure

  1. Spray reasonable amount of hair product on wig/mannequin.
  2. Leave hair product on wig for about 2-3 hours.
  3. Examine each wig to see which hair product provides more moisture for the longest.
  4. Repeat this process with each hair product, and examine very closely.

Results


Luster's



Luster’s Pink Moisturizer/Glosser
Spray was very shiny; it has a great smell and it has almost been a half hour.
After 2 hours, the spray weared off a little on the mannequin, but a great amount of moisture was seen on the wig.


Wet and Wavy Frizz-Free Glosser
The spray didn’t come in effect until about 15 minutes.
After 2 and a half hours, the moisture is barely present in the wig.


Placebo Spray Bottle (Water)
Water provided shine after the first 14 minutes after spraying wig.
After 3 hours, the water on the wig was gone. There was no shine or moisture.



Proposed Improvement
                    
            To both hair care product companies, I first off would like to say that both products prove plenty of use. Although, there are chemicals that do more bad rather than good to the hair. I would like them to keep in mind that those types of chemicals should not be put in those products for future references. The more people use the product, the more they put their hair to risk, using products with too many bad chemicals.

Maybelline Fit me! Foundation vs. NYX Matte Foundation

Starting out with this project I didn't really know what to do. I was going between hair products or skin care products. Ultimately, I decided to do an experiment about foundations because my mother and I use two different foundations and come out with different outcomes.
